At Aurora Lodge, we don’t believe in “parachute hospitality.” We are part of the soil, the sea, and the community of Ile aux Nattes. In 2024, we became one of the early adopters of the Sainte Marie ECO Label—a locally developed certification designed to protect the unique (and fragile) beauty of our home.
While this label isn’t internationally accredited yet, we think it’s even better: it was built specifically for the realities of Madagascar. Being ECO Committed means we meet at least two major actions in every sustainability category and lead at least one dedicated community project
Here is how we’re turning those criteria into real impact:
Water and energy are finite resources on an island. We’ve moved away from diesel dependency to embrace a cleaner path.
Solar Autonomy: We use a full solar panel system to provide 24/7 electricity.
Conservation: We use LED lighting throughout the lodge and have put in place low-consuming processes to ensure we don’t over-extract from the island’s precious groundwater.
Plastic waste is the biggest threat to our reefs. Our goal is a circular economy where “waste” doesn’t exist.
The Plastic Ban: We have eliminated single-use plastic straws, cups, and are working on the bottles. With our new water-filtration installation, we will from mid 2026 provide filtered water in glass carafes to keep you hydrated without the trash.
Composting: 100% of our organic kitchen waste is composted on-site to nourish our gardens.
Natural Packaging: Our Pizz’Aurora delivery replaces cardboard boxes with traditional ravinala or banana leaves—upcycled décor at its most delicious.
We believe the best ingredients and crafts are found right in our backyard.
Island Flavors: Over 50% of our ingredients come directly from local producers, fishermen, and the village bakery.
Cultural Promotion: Our menus are designed to promote local Malagasy cuisine and the incredible spices—like wild pepper and vanilla—that make this island famous.
Sustainability is as much about people as it is about the planet.
Local Team: Over 80% of our staff are from the local community. We don’t just hire locally; we provide professional training to international standards to help our team grow.
Cultural Tours: We offer activities and excursions led by local guides, ensuring that your tourism dollars go directly into the hands of the people who know this island best.
We want to inspire our guests and our staff to be stewards of the island.
Guest Awareness: You’ll find eco-tips and nature rules displayed throughout the lodge to help you navigate the “Slow Life” responsibly.
Staff Training: Our team undergoes regular training on eco-practices, from waste management to energy conservation.
We don’t just “say” we’re eco-friendly; we track it.
Record Keeping: We keep detailed records of our water use, energy production, and waste streams to ensure we are always improving.
Community Validation: We operate under a strict Environmental Code of Conduct, validated by our peers and the local community.
We are currently working toward the ECO Excellence badge—the highest level of the Sainte Marie certification. This involves even deeper community integration and zero-waste-to-landfill targets. By staying with us, you are directly funding this journey.
Misaotra for helping us keep Ile aux Nattes magical.
