So, you’re ready to trade the noise for the ocean breeze? We can’t wait to have you. To help you prep for your trip, we’ve laid out everything—from picking your perfect bungalow to understanding how our solar-powered world works.
We’ve designed our spaces to be more than just rooms—they are transitions into a simpler way of living. All our bungalows are built with local materials and a minimalist Scandinavian touch.
The Modern Comfort Bungalows: Our flagship retreats for those who love clean lines and “Tropical Minimalism.” These are airy, light-filled, and feature our signature open-sky tropical shower. It’s basically like showering in a garden under the stars.
The Family Bungalow: Space for the whole crew. We’ve designed this specifically for families who want to reconnect. It’s spacious, cozy, and tucked into a private corner of our garden so the kids have space to be kids, and you have space to breathe.
The Classic Island Bungalows: For the travelers who want that authentic, “hidden gem” feel. These honor the 20-year history of our site—simple, traditional, and located just steps from the sand.
Welcome to our kitchen, where Scandinavian simplicity meets the vibrant bounty of Madagascar. We don’t believe in importing “fluff” from across the world; instead, we take the incredible local products found right here on our doorstep and transform them into world-kitchen masterpieces.
Madagascar is a world-renowned spice heaven, and we put that heritage right at the center of our plates. From the zing of fresh ginger to the warmth of organic vanilla and wild pepper, every dish is a celebration of island life. Because we are eco-committed by heart, we prioritize sustainable choices—which is why over 30% of our menu is dedicated to creative, delicious vegetarian dishes. It’s fresh, it’s vibrant, and it’s better for the planet.
Every day: 07:00 – 10:00 AM We believe the way you start your morning sets the tone for your whole day in the Slow Life. Every room rate at Aurora Lodge includes our Basic Breakfast, a curated start to your morning featuring:
A fresh coffee or tea to wake up the senses.
Artisanal bread from our local island bakery.
Creamy butter and our signature homemade jams.
A glass of freshly pressed tropical juice.
A vibrant serving of seasonal fruits.
Want to level up? We offer an Add-on Menu for those mornings when you need a little something extra. Think perfectly prepared eggs, creamy chia-puddings, Greek-style yogurt, fresh avocado servings, overnight oats, or even locally smoked fish. Every day can be a different flavor.
Open for Lunch: 12:00 – 15:00 | Open for Dinner: 18:00 – 21:00 Our kitchen operates with two distinct personalities, both designed to take you on a culinary journey:
The Tapas Menu: Perfect for the curious eater. This menu is full of small, punchy dishes that allow you to taste all the different flavors of the island in one single seating. It’s social, it’s fun, and it’s meant for sharing.
The Specialty Menu: Here is where our chefs really shine. This menu features our Signature Dishes—the plates we’ve perfected to showcase the very best of Malagasy ingredients through a modern, international lens.
Open Daily: 12:00 – 21:00 We’ve kept a delicious piece of our history alive with our traditional wood-fired oven. We craft authentic Italian-style pizzas using locally sourced ingredients that have no business tasting this good. Not to brag, but the word on the beach is that these are the best pizzas on the island. Whether it’s a quick lunch between swims or a cozy dinner under the stars, our pizzeria is always a vibe.

Open from 07:00 until the last guest heads to bed. The Aurora Bar is the social heartbeat of the lodge. While we offer a full selection of chilled sodas, crisp beers, and a hand-picked selection of wines, we really pride ourselves on two things:
Tropical Cocktails: Made with the freshest fruits of the season. No syrups, no fakes—just pure island sunshine in a glass.
Rhum Arrangé: You can’t visit Madagascar without diving into the tradition of Rhum Arrangé. We infuse our own rums with local spices and fruits, creating a smooth, botanical finish that is the ultimate sundowner.
Whether you’re starting with a morning espresso or ending with a midnight rhum, our bar is open as long as the conversation is flowing.
Aurora Lodge is your private playground, and our Reception is the heart of it. We’ve kept our facilities low-impact but high-energy, giving you everything you need to switch off and dive into the island rhythm.
The Reception: Your Island Basecamp Our reception is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00. Think of this as your go-to spot for… well, everything. Our team is here to get you checked in, hand over the keys to your sanctuary, and share the best local tips—whether you need an extra towel or want to know where the lemurs are hanging out today.
Gear Up for the Lagoon: We want you to experience the water as much as the land. That’s why we offer kayaks and snorkeling equipment free of charge for all our guests. The reef is quite literally our backyard; grab a mask, hop in a kayak, and go explore the incredible biodiversity of the Indian Ocean at your own pace.
Island Games & The Social Vibe: When you’re not in the water, we have plenty of ways to keep the good vibes flowing. Channel your inner Mediterranean at our pétanque field, challenge your travel partners to a round of board games, or find a quiet corner in our curated library.
There is so much more to discover around the property—from hidden garden paths to our favorite sunset viewpoints.
The Magic of Ile aux Nattes: Ile aux Nattes is one of those rare places that feels like a secret the rest of the world hasn’t quite caught onto yet. It’s a tiny, car-free paradise where the only “traffic” you’ll encounter is a crossing lemur or a local fisherman heading to the lagoon. Because the island is small, it has this incredible, concentrated energy—every sandy path leads to a new discovery, and every corner holds a different view of the turquoise Indian Ocean. It’s a place that invites you to put down your phone, kick off your shoes, and remember what it feels like to truly wander.
Find Your Pace: The Art of Doing Nothing (Or Everything). At Aurora Lodge, we are world-class experts in the “art of doing nothing.” We believe there is a deep, restorative power in spending an afternoon in a hammock, watching the light change over the reef. But we also know that for many of our guests, the best way to recharge is through movement and curiosity.
If a day of total stillness isn’t for you, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. We can “shower” you in activities, from high-energy water adventures to quiet, soulful workshops. Whether you want to push your limits with a deep-sea excursion or simply take a slow stroll to the island’s lighthouse, we’ve curated a selection of experiences that ensure you’ll never be bored.
A Deep-Dive into Local Life: What truly sets this island apart isn’t just the white sand; it’s the people and the culture. The Malagasy soul is warm, welcoming, and incredibly vibrant. Exploring Ile aux Nattes means more than just seeing the sights; it’s about the smiles you’ll share with the locals, the interesting history you’ll hear in the village, and the amazing variety of restaurants and bars that dot the coast. We encourage you to get out there, taste the local flavors, and see why this island is considered one of the most fascinating destinations on the planet.
Explore the four ways to dive into our world below:
Go Further. Ready to head out? From seasonal whale watching to hidden lagoon tours and boat trips around the coast, our excursions are designed to take you deeper into the wild beauty of Madagascar.
Stay Local. Get hands-on with the island’s soul. These activities happen right here at Aurora Lodge or just a short walk away—focusing on cultural workshops, wildlife spotting, and low-impact island fun.
Get Inspired. We are proud members of the local tourism association. For an even deeper look at our island’s heritage, events, and community projects, check out their official guide.
Taste the Island. Beyond our own kitchen, Ile aux Nattes is a "foodie" map waiting to be explored. Discover vibrant beach bars and local family-run restaurants tucked away in every sandy corner.
At Aurora Lodge, we’re big fans of knowing our strengths. We’re experts in hospitality, design, and island vibes—but when it comes to the deep, transformative work of wellness, we believe in bringing in the absolute best.
That is why we’ve partnered with the experts at NosYlang. It’s professional, soulful wellness designed to get you into the island rhythm.
Getting to a car-free island at the edge of the world is all part of the adventure. To reach the shores of Aurora Lodge, you first need to make your way to our “big sister” island, Ile Sainte Marie. Whether you arrive by air or by sea, the final leg of the journey is where the “Slow Life” truly begins.
By Flight: Hop on a domestic flight to Sainte Marie Airport (SMS). It’s a stunning aerial view of the reefs—keep your eyes peeled for whales if it’s the right season!
By Boat: Several ferry services run between the mainland and the main port in Ambodifotatra.
Once you’ve touched down or docked, you have two choices: We can organize your entire transfer for you (highly recommended for a stress-free arrival!), or you can navigate the route yourself.
Here is the breakdown of the journey to our shores:
Step 01: Grab a tuk-tuk at the airport for a quick ride to “La Pointe” (the southern tip of Sainte Marie). It takes less than 10 minutes. If you’ve traveled light and fancy a stretch, it’s a beautiful 1.5 km walk through the local scenery.
Step 02: From La Pointe, you’ll hop in a boat direct to the shores of Aurora Lodge.
Step 01: Jump in a tuk-tuk for a scenic 13 km drive down the coast to “La Pointe”. This takes about 30 minutes and gives you a great first look at island life
Step 02: Exactly the same as above! Once you hit the water at La Pointe, you’re just a boat ride away from your first sundowner at our bar.
Want to skip the haggling and the guesswork? Just let us know your arrival details in advance. We can arrange for a trusted driver and boat captain to meet you at the airport or port and bring you straight to our beach.
At Aurora Lodge, we want your transition into island life to be as smooth as the lagoon. While we’re all about the “Slow Life,” our reception team keeps things humming behind the scenes to make sure you’re taken care of.
Reception Hours: We’re here for you every day from 08:00 to 18:00.
Late Arrivals: Traveling can be unpredictable—we get it. If you’re arriving outside of our regular hours, don’t sweat it. We’re happy to welcome you at any time with no extra fees, we just ask that you give us a heads-up in advance so we can have someone ready to greet you!
Check-In (12:00): Your sanctuary will be ready for you at noon. If you arrive earlier, feel free to drop your bags, grab a fresh juice at the bar, and start your vacation early.
Check-Out (11:00): We ask that you say your “see you laters” to your bungalow by 11:00 AM so we can get it perfect for the next guest.
Not ready to leave the island yet? Check-out doesn’t mean the adventure is over. You are more than welcome to store your luggage at the reception after you’ve checked out. Feel free to spend the rest of the day snorkeling, lounging in the hammocks, or grabbing one last pizza before you head home. We’ll keep your bags safe until you’re ready to catch your boat.
We like to keep the “business” side of things as simple and transparent as possible, so you can spend your time focusing on the waves instead of the paperwork. To keep your stay organized, we use a straightforward two-step billing process:
At Check-In: We’ll settle the bill for your accommodation when you first arrive. This gets the essentials out of the way so you can officially kick off your vacation.
The “Island Tab”: Throughout your stay, any extra magic—like delicious dinners at the restaurant, sunset cocktails at the bar, guided excursions, or your transfers—will be added to your personal room tab. You can settle this second bill comfortably at the reception when you check out.
We are one of the few spots on the island that offers modern payment options. We happily accept:
Cash: Local currency (Malagasy Ariary / MGA).
Cards: VISA and Mastercard.
While Aurora Lodge embraces 21st-century standards, the rest of Ile aux Nattes is beautifully analog. Most local businesses, small beach bars, and village shops do not accept electronic payments or credit cards.
To make sure you can fully experience the island’s culture and flavors without any hiccups, we highly recommend bringing enough cash for your out-of-lodge adventures.
At Aurora, we believe in being 100% transparent about your stay. Beyond our base rate, there are a few small local taxes and contributions that help keep Ile aux Nattes beautiful and support the local community.
These are typically settled at the lodge during your stay. Here is the breakdown:
These are mandatory government and local commune taxes required for all visitors to Sainte Marie and Ile aux Nattes.
Taxe de Séjour (Commune Tax): 10,000 Ariary per person. This is a one-time fee for your first night on the island.
Pro-tip: If you’ve already stayed at another hotel on Sainte Marie or Ile aux Nattes before arriving at Aurora, just let us know! If you’ve already paid this tax elsewhere, you won’t have to pay it again.
Taxe Vignette (State Tax): 1,000 Ariary per bungalow, per night. This is a small state-level contribution required for every night of your stay.
5,000 Ariary per person
Because we live on an island with limited resources, every small bit of help goes a long way. This isn’t just a fee; it’s a direct investment in the future of our home. We collect this contribution to ensure that tourism remains a force for good on Ile aux Nattes.
Where does your 5,000 Ar go?
50% to the Ile aux Nattes Insulary Committee: This fund directly supports local sustainable development projects, from waste management to community infrastructure.
50% to Destination Ile aux Nattes: This goes to our local tourism association, which works tirelessly to develop and promote responsible eco-tourism across the island.
By staying with us, you’re helping us protect the very magic that brought you here in the first place. Misaotra! (Thank you!)
We’re big fans of the “Digital Detox” in our bungalows, but we know the outside world occasionally needs a check-in. Whether you need to post a sunset photo or join a quick meeting from paradise, we’ve got you covered.
Our high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi is available throughout the restaurant and garden. With 99.9% uptime, it’s as reliable as the island tides—meaning you get the best of both worlds: a remote island escape with 21st-century connectivity.
Ile aux Nattes is a special place, and part of its magic comes from being entirely disconnected from the national water and electricity grids. At Aurora Lodge, we are 100% self-sustained. This means we create our own power and manage our own water—a “luxury of consciousness” that we are proud to share with you.
We harness the Malagasy sun to power the lodge. Our solar system is robust and provides 24/7 electricity 99% of the time. However, solar energy is a finite resource, and it does have its limitations.
To ensure that every guest has a reliable 24/7 supply, we have a few strict “power rules” regarding high-heat and high-consumption devices. We kindly ask that you do not use or bring:
Hair-care tools: Hair-dryers, curling irons, or hair straighteners.
Kitchen appliances: Electrical water-boilers, stoves, blenders, or rice-cookers.
Essentially, anything that creates heat electronically will overwhelm our system. We thank you for respecting these boundaries so we can keep the lights on for everyone!
Our water system is a self-contained cycle designed for the island environment. It consists of our own well, a water tower, and gas-powered water heaters.
Hot Water 24/7: Unlike many remote locations, you will have hot water for your shower whenever you need it.
The Island Flow: Because we rely on gravity and a self-contained system, the water pressure is “island-style”—it’s functional and constant, but won’t be the high-pressure blast you might find in a city skyscraper.
Our Commitment to You Living off-grid is a beautiful challenge. If you ever experience an issue with your water or electricity, please let our reception team know immediately. We are experts at navigating our systems and will do our absolute best to resolve any hiccups as quickly as possible.
Ile aux Nattes is famously laid-back and generally very safe. However, to ensure you can fully relax into the Slow Life, we’ve put a few thoughtful security measures in place so you never have to think twice about your belongings.
On-Site Security: For your comfort, we have a night guard on duty and security cameras positioned at key spots across the property. We rarely see any issues, but we believe in being prepared.
Lock Up: Even if you’re just popping over to the restaurant for a pizza or a cocktail, we recommend closing your windows and locking your door. No need to tempt fate!
The Safe Zone: Please keep your valuables locked in your in-room safe or keep them on your person while exploring.
Cash Wisdom: Since Aurora Lodge accepts credit cards, you don’t need to carry large amounts of money. For your island adventures, we recommend a maximum of 150,000 Ariary per person, per day.
Island Nightlife: If you’re heading out to experience the island’s discotheques and bars after dark, just keep a casual eye on your bag—standard travel common sense applies!
At Aurora Lodge, we believe your room should be a constant refuge. Our team provides twice-daily service to ensure you stay comfortable and protected from the elements.
Morning Service: Our housekeeping team will refresh your room, tidy your space, and ensure everything is sparkling for the day ahead.
Afternoon Turndown: In the late afternoon, we return to prepare your sanctuary for the night. We’ll lower your mosquito net and light a mosquito coil to ensure you have a peaceful, bite-free sleep.
Water is our most precious resource on the island. To help us conserve it, we’ve adopted a sustainable approach to laundry:
Towels: If you hang your towel up to dry, we know you’re happy to use it again. If you’d like fresh ones, simply leave them on the floor and we will replace them.
Sheets: To minimize our footprint, we change bed linens every three days (and, of course, between every guest). If your sheets are visibly dirty or you’d prefer a more frequent change, just let the reception know—we’re happy to accommodate.
Travel light and let us handle the washing. You’ll find a laundry basket and price list in your bungalow. Simply leave your items in the basket, and we’ll take care of the rest.
The “Sun-Dry” Timeline:
Because we lean into nature, our laundry is air-dried by the tropical sun and breeze.
Sunny Weather: You’ll have your clothes back the very next day.
Rainy Weather: It may take up to 3 days to ensure everything is perfectly dry.
Laundry Pricing:
| Item | Price (MGA) |
| T-shirt | 2,500 |
| Sweater | 3,000 |
| Pants / Dress | 3,000 |
| Underwear | 2,000 |
| Socks (pair) | 1,500 |
We are constantly striving to improve and elevate the Aurora Lodge experience. We believe that working with the best people is the only way to grow, and we are currently training our local staff to meet international standards.
Your feedback is our most valuable tool! If our cleaning or service is ever anything less than satisfactory, please let our reception team know immediately. It allows us to provide specific, real-time training for our team and ensures we can make it right for you instantly. We appreciate you being part of our journey toward excellence.
While tipping is never obligatory, our team is incredibly grateful for any extra appreciation if you’ve enjoyed your stay at Aurora. To ensure our appreciation reaches everyone fairly, we have a collective tipping policy.
We kindly ask that you do not tip individual staff members directly. Instead, you’ll find a Community Tip Box located at the reception. We believe in a “one team” philosophy, so all contributions are divided equally among every single member of the Aurora staff. This ensures that the people you might not see every day—like our hard-working maintenance crew, laundry team, and gardeners—are recognized just as much as our customer-facing roles. Every one of them is essential to the quality of your stay, and this system ensures no one is left behind
We know that life happens, and sometimes even the best-laid travel plans need to shift. However, because Aurora Lodge is a small, independent boutique eco-lodge with a limited number of bungalows, cancellations have a significant impact on our team and the local community we support. We try to be as flexible as possible, but we also have to ensure we can keep the lights (and the solar panels) on!
Change of Plans? If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let us know as early as possible. The more notice we have, the better the chance we can offer your sanctuary to another traveler.
Our Policy:
We highly recommend that all our guests take out travel insurance to cover any unexpected hiccups. It’s the best way to ensure you’re protected, no matter what happens.
